Gerbera breeding

In our breeding program, about 700-800 gerbera crossings are made yearly resulting in about 20,000 seedlings. After 1 year of reviewing, 400-500 seedlings are selected for further testing. One year later, out of all these plants, 100 codes are selected again. After 3 to 5 years of additional evaluating, on average 5 to 8 varieties will make it into the commercial market.

One of our big inventions is the Germini®, a small flower which made a big impact due to the immense increase of efficiency. It is considered the biggest breakthrough in the gerbera industry and Terra Nigra received a Holland Award for this introduction. Currently the market share of the Germini® is still rising due to the versatile nature of this flower.

A few years ago, we introduced the Gerrondo®. The appearance of this remarkable flower is characterized by its enormous quantity of flower petals and round shape, resulting in a Dahlia like flower. The Gerrondo® has won several awards and receives promising feedback from buyers.

Our newest invention is the Gerfolia®. This unique gerbera with foliage attched to the stem was officially introduced in the fall of 2007. Because of its more natural and playful appearance, this type of gerbera is appealing to a large group of consumers.
